UICA Holiday Artists’ Market
Forty-seven local artists came together under the roof of the Urban Institute of Contemporary Arts in downtown Grand Rapids this weekend to showcase their work in the 23rd annual Holiday Artists’ Market. From jewelry and clothing to stationery and home goods, shoppers were full of excitement as they browsed the two floors full of fabulous gift ideas.
I visited the Holiday Artists’ Market on Saturday morning. This was the first year it was held in the UICA’s new home, and as part of the HollyJolly window display contest, the windows along Fulton Street were filled with a whimsical entry that included the longest paper chain I have ever seen. I could not wait to get started and once I got my map and list of artists, I began making my way through the building.
One of my favorite parts about this event is seeing and talking to these artists who are our neighbors and community members, and hearing them talk about their work. They have poured their heart and soul into these pieces of art, and we are very lucky to have so much talent right here in West Michigan. The crowds were big, the lines were long, and holiday shopping was in full-swing! Keep it up Grand Rapids…when you are headed out to do your shopping this year, remember to stay local!
